Permaculture Design for Buddhafield's Land at BroadHemburyAn Initial Design has been completed for our beautiful land near Honiton in Devon. The ethos behind the design is to provide at least some of the food and fuel we will need in the future by planting trees and edible plants now. Last winter we experimentally planted some of Phil Corbett's own root fruit trees into a thick area of gorse on the land. We hope that the gorse will protect the trees from the deer, so that we do not have to erect a deer fence. Using own root trees also means that if they do get nibbled they are more likely to rejuvenate. Other parts of the design include :Planting more nut trees. Planting a hedge, to enable us to use one of the flattest areas on the land in the future. Cultivating areas of perennial salads and soft fruit. Planting areas of coppice. Mushroom growing. This year we will hold our first Green Retreat on the land. This will include introductory teachings on permaculture and deep ecology. There is more general focus within the Buddhafield team on land issues and this season will see the design for this land evolving. The design will finally be completed in the Autumn/Winter this year. There will be more information on the web site. |
